This thread is killing me. I want to put some of the previous recs on repeat, but there's so much good music in here. Bootaaay, it feels like you just dropped a million bombs with your last few posts. I did have Hugo Kant though.

And CRS, that Blazo release is smooth as hell. E: OMFG, hahahahahaha, I just hit the clannad remix on 'Beyond the Clouds.' I once tried slicing that track up myself, so I always get a chuckle when I hear it used somewhere else. This is better than anything I ever did though. Emancipator - Safe in Steep Cliffs emancipator in general is incredibly solid and should be not be slept on at all, but this album of his, this is some next level shit.

While listening, you'll go from tracks like Which sounds as if it's prepping your ass for the battle to come, to a track like Which basically signals your loss of that battle. It's amazing just how much a story you're able to derive from these instrumentals. Funny note: He didn't start out as a dude on Hydeout, but he was picked up by Nujabes for a Japanese release after his first album, 'Soon it Will Be Cold enough,' made it's way around and over the seas.

Alright, so here it is. I'm not entirely happy with it, and I'm sure I've forgotten some dope projects (didn't forget that Roc joint though, Boozer). Anyway, I wanted to get it out before Feb. Rolls around so here it is, for better or worse. Bob’s Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums 2013 (Part 1 of 2): 1. Big KRIT - King Remembered in Time (April 10, 2013) Posted by Bleachway Well, I called it when it came out in April that this would be at the top of my list, and here it is.

I truly believe KRIT is the best thing to happen to hip-hop in the last 5 years. Son does nearly all of his own production and strikes the perfect balance of pitched soul, jazzy leads, and hard hitting bass/percussion that typifies quality southern hip-hop. KRIT blends Pimp C-esque swagger with southern introspection a la 3 stacks. This is arguably KRIT’s best release to date it’s arguably his 4th best release to date, which is simply a testament to how solid KRIT’s mixtape game has been so far. Personally, I think it’s nearly flawless, with the exception of the Future feature (snippet?!?!) that was sort of shoehorned into the middle of the tape. Be on the lookout for Cadillactica dropping later this year.

Standout track: DL: 2. NOM - Lucid (September 17, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja This is another one of those gems that I’ve mined by haphazardly browsing through the multitude of “hip.hop” tagged albums uploaded on what.cd. Like Lute’s debut last year, which I found the same way, this album came completely out of left field. Had never heard of NOM and still don’t know all that much about him. Apparently dude is out of Iowa. Laid back flow, dope lyricism, throwback production. Standout track: DL: 3.

Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap (April 30, 2013) Apparently was never posted in threadlolwut I wrote this album off. When it came out it seemed everyone and their mothers were raving about how good this album was. Anything that pops up on my Facebook feed is going to be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism. Call it hipsterism, backpackerism, or any other ism you want I’ve found over the years that most album releases that are embraced by the public at large end up being utter trash. But I’m always willing to give something at least one listen. The first time I gave this album a listen, tbh I was kind of put off by Chance’s voice.

He’s got that sort of weezy delivery most reminiscent of, well, Weezy — whose music is anathema to me. I gave it a quick listen and decided while the production was nice, it really wasn’t all that great and the hype was unwarranted. Then I let it marinate. Several months later, I had the chorus of Cocoa Butter Kisses stuck in my head and decided to give the record another chance. A real chance this time.

And I loved it. If there's one word to describe this record, it’s infectious.

If you can get past his voice, which I’ve since come to enjoy, you’ll find an album filled with lush production and dope, off-the-wall lyricism. One of the most fun hip-hop records to listen to in recent memory.

Standout track: DL: 4. L’Orange & Stik Figa - The City Under the City (October 15, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja Prior to this year, I hadn’t really listened to Stik Figa at all. I’d heard him on Oddisee’s Mental Liberation album, but didn’t really give it a second thought. In April, I downloaded his back catalogue and was hooked. I’d listened to a bit of L’Orange prior to TCUTC, mostly the Dilla tribute project he put out.

His heavy reliance on pre-war type samples definitely gave him a distinct, dope sound, but I wasn’t really sure he could carry a whole album with it. TCUTC removed all doubt. While the pairing might seem odd, L’Orange’s production sets a dope soundscape that compliment’s Figa’s flows throughout. Standout track: DL: 5. Doctor Patient EP (September 01, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja Another project that came out of left field for me. Reminds me of Joey Bada$$, in that he’s a young cat out of NYC spitting over gritty throwback East Coast boom-bap. It’s an EP, so it only consists of 7 tracks, but to be honest, I think that’s one of the project’s strengths; every track bangs, so it’s very easy to listen to it straight through if you’re in the mood some hard hitting NY ish.

Standout track: DL. Bob’s Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums 2013 (Part 2 of 2): 6. Epidemic - Something For Tha Listeners (June 25, 2013) Posted by: liftthat I know Boozer was a big fan of their previous release, Monochrome Skies; while that album was dope, I think the production was improved dramatically on this album.

While it seemed to me like most of the songs on Monochrome Skies featured beats based around jangly string samples that got tiring pretty quickly, I think Esco's production on SFTL is one of the best examples of jazz-hop production since Clin D’oeil (which I consider the gold standard in the genre). Epidemic bring deep lyrics with laid back flows to match the albums vibe. Definitively check this out if you’re into jazzy hip-hop. Standout track: DL: 7. Oddisee - The Beauty in All / Tangible Dream (November 02, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja While not quite reaching the heights of Rock Creek Park — which I consider one of the best instrumental hip-hop albums of all time — The Beauty in All nevertheless delivers the goods. It was released with a sister mixtape, Tangible Dream, which is also an incredible strong collection in it’s own right.

When taken together (they were released together) I think they constitute Oddisee’s strongest output since RCP. Standout track: DL (Both TBIA & TD): 8. DJ Hazey 82 - Blazo - Colors of Jazz 2 - The Mash Ups (December 01, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja I’ve been a big fan of Blazo’s production for a while now. I downloaded Colors of Jazz 2 when it first came out and gave it a spin.

It was a good collection of jazzy beats, but there wasn't a whole lot there that had me coming back for more. A month ago or so I found this mashup that someone did using the beats from Colors of Jazz 2 and acapellas from varied group of rappers, including: Common, Black Thought, Guru, Home Brew, Substantial, Grap Luva, Kno, Apani B, and more. The mashup is very well done and the rapping complements the beats very well, resulting in a great collection of top notch rapping over some expertly crafted beats. Standout track: DL: 9. Gummy Soul - 93 Still (September 04, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja Another year. Another Gummy Soul album. Gummy Soul, now unfortunately sans Amerigo Gazaway, remixed Souls of Mischief’s ’93 Till album with the source material of classic 90s hip-hop beats.

This album isn’t on the level of either Fela Soul or Bizzare Tribe, but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Perhaps it’s the absence of Amerigo Gazaway, perhaps its simply weaker starting material (93 till is a great album, but for Fela Soul and Bizarre Tribe, the tracks chosen spanned multiple albums), perhaps its the Cease and Desist delivered to G.S. That resulted in safer sample choices I don’t know. I ain’t even trippin’ though, it’s still my 9th favorite album released last year.

Standout track: DL: 10. Haruka Nakamura - Melodica (September 06, 2013) Posted by: bobthedamaja I’ve got a soft spot for Nujabes-esque jazzy hip-hop out of Japan. Haruka Nakamura’s Melodica is, I think, the best example of the genre to come out last year. The album was released on Nujabes’ label Hydeout Productions and features Jun on 2 of the album’s tracks, along with guests spots from Substantial, Cise Star, Pase Rock, and Shing02.

Blazo Colors Of Jazz

While many of the tracks veer more towards jazz than hip-hop, there’s enough kick&snare sprinkled throughout for me to consider this a hip-hop release. If you’re a fan of Nujabes, Nomak, Ljones, etc. Be sure to check this one out. Some really gorgeous stuff.

Standout track: DL.
